Pain Perdu IS French toast

August 18, 2017

In Australia we have grown up with French toast, and many times I've been asked is this really "French" ?

I didn't think so until researching French recipes for this blog and realised AH HA!! Pain perdu IS our French toast.  Kind of. Different name, but yes  ... very similar idea. It's delish as a breakfast with actual sliced bread, but in France we would typically eat this prepared in a baking tray stuffed of brioche and baked in the oven then served as a dessert. Either way, it's damn delish.

Pain Perdu - the real French recipe.

TIP: Prepare this easy dessert at the last minute when unexpected guests visit !

1 loaf Brioche, torn into pieces

4 egg yolks

1/4 cup sugar

1 cup cream

Seeds from 1 vanilla bean

Whisk eggs, sugar, vanilla and cream together and add brioche, stirring to evenly coat in mixture.

OPTION Cover and leave in fridge overnight, however for a quick last minute dessert skip this step.

Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Butter up  a cake tin and bake for about 30 minutes until browned on top!  Shake it up by adding berries, choc chips or orange segments to the mix!

Cut into slices and serve with fruit compote and icing sugar.

Bon appetit!
